The Challenge
Dunmow Group, Essex’s largest skip hire provider, required a new recycling facility to support growing operational demand and improve the speed, efficiency and sustainability of its waste processing operation.
The company’s previous system had been in operation since 2012 and no longer offered the capacity required to support Dunmow’s continued growth. The main objective was to increase processing capacity, improve material recovery, reduce waste to landfill and create a safer, more efficient working environment.
The Kiverco Solution
Kiverco designed and delivered a bespoke, multi-million-pound recycling plant at Dunmow Group’s main recycling centre in Chelmsford.
The new Kiverco system combines robust shredding, screening, air separation, metal recovery, optical sorting and manual quality control to maximise recovery across a wide range of material streams.
Material first passes through a primary shredder, belt weigh scales and primary magnet, with a front-end reversible conveyor allowing any potential fire hazards to be safely removed from the process. From there, the material is further processed through a long part separator, combi screen, fines magnet, density separators, oversize and midsize magnets, an eddy current separator and optical sorter.
To support the production of clean, high-quality recovered materials, the plant also includes a 2-bay split lane double-sided picking station and a 1-bay single-sided picking station. Recovered materials are then directed into dedicated material bays and bunkers, helping Dunmow Group improve material quality, increase recovery and support reuse, recycling, Energy from Waste and Refuse-Derived Fuel production.
The Result
The new Kiverco plant has doubled Dunmow Group’s processing capacity, enabling the business to handle up to 600 tonnes of waste per day.
By increasing throughput and improving separation performance, the facility allows Dunmow to recover more valuable material, divert more waste away from landfill and support more sustainable waste management across Essex and beyond.
The project was delivered in just 13 weeks and became fully operational by August, demonstrating Kiverco’s ability to design and deliver high-performance recycling solutions within demanding timescales.
