Skip Hire Company Powers Through Waste
Established 38 years ago, Carl Bird Skip Hire is a family-run waste management and recycling company based in North Walsham, Norfolk. Employing 22 people, the business operates eight-wheel tippers and offers an extensive range of skips for hire, including 25–40-yard roll-on roll-off skips and 6–18-yard skips.
In addition to skip hire services, the company supplies a wide range of recycled and quarried aggregates such as crushed concrete and brick, Type 1 granite, screened topsoil and sand.
The Challenge
With increasing volumes of material on site, Carl Bird Skip Hire required a highly productive, mobile waste recovery solution capable of processing contaminated hardcore efficiently.
The business was focused on improving material recovery rates, extracting value from waste streams, and progressing toward its long-term objective of achieving zero waste to landfill, all while maintaining operational efficiency and minimising downtime.
The Solution
Working in partnership with Finlay Plant Southern, Carl Bird Skip Hire introduced the Kiverco PS122 Picking Line to site on a two-week hire basis.
The mobile picking line was delivered and fully set up within just a few hours, allowing operations to commence the same day.
Fed by the company’s on-site Terex Finlay 883+, the PS122 enabled a four-man picking team to efficiently process thousands of tonnes of contaminated hardcore.

The Outcome
Despite not operating the machine every day during the hire period, the team successfully processed a 4,000-tonne stockpile. Materials recovered included wood, plastics, ferrous metals and clean stone — significantly improving material recovery rates and supporting landfill diversion targets.
The performance of the Kiverco PS122 has led Carl Bird Skip Hire to plan further hires as part of its ongoing waste recovery strategy.
